You've probably heard of Dior's most iconic creation, the Lady Dior, one of the most popular designer bags of all time, and Lady Diana's favorite. But do you know the story behind it?

For example, do you know that it was not created for Diana, but renamed in his honor?

An inseparable bag of the Princess of Wales

It was marketed in 1994 and did not have a name at the time. In September 1995, the Lady Dior bag was donated to the Princess of Wales by the first French lady, Bernadette Chirac, on the occasion of her visit to the Cezanne exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, sponsored by the LVMH group.

The last creation of the house Dior was immediately adopted by the Princess, who then ordered it in each version available.

In November 1995, on the occasion of a visit to a children's home in Birmingham, Princess Diana was photographed by the international press with the famous bag, holding a child in her arms. A few weeks later, during a state visit to Argentina, she appeared again with her favorite bag coming out of the official plane.

It was at this moment that the Lady Dior bag was definitely associated with the most publicized woman in the world. In 1996, as a tribute to the princess, he was renamed "Lady Dior", with his blessing.

A creation that requires great know-how

Created in a "couture spirit", the Lady Dior bag, in leather and quilted seams, reflects a number of codes specific to the Dior house. Over the years, several celebrities have represented the Lady Dior bag, including the first French lady Carla Bruni in 1996, then Diane Kruger , Monica Bellucci and now Marion Cotillard . It remains today the most iconic bag of the famous haute couture house.

The caning is inspired by the chairs of Napoleon III used by Christian Dior to welcome his clients on the day of his parade in 1947. The letters DIOR represented by charms serve as an iconic imprint of the Haute Couture house.

"Real luxury requires the best materials and the best know-how," said Christian Dior . That's why, in the workshops of the house, each piece is made by hand. It all starts with the manual cutting of the leather. The pieces are then assembled, molded around a wooden shape and sewn together with precision. The charms, that is to say, the four letters Dior, are also hand-made.

And in case you doubt the quality of this luxurious accessory, know that 140 separate pieces are needed to create a Lady Dior bag. Impressive.
