What is a zebra cake?

This is the new food trend that has stirred all summer culinary bloggers and that may well last because it is an ideal cake for tea time in the fall. That being said, the zebra cake is an easy cake in its realization : it is simply a chocolate-vanilla cake that tastes like a marbled cake. But the chocolate lines are graphical welts rather than waves. In other words, we take a classic marble cake recipe and then it becomes more complex.

Reminder: the ingredients of the marbled cake, which also work for the zebra cake: eggs, flour, sugar, yeast, vanilla extract and bitter cocoa ... But we can also dare the variations with pistachio aroma instead of vanilla or blueberry puree instead of chocolate paste. Finally, we also see more and more zebra cakes made with oil instead of butter: the texture is lighter (like muffins) but the taste more neutral.

The steps to make the zebra cake

  1. Butter evenly round a cake pan . Flour it, then tap to remove the excess.
  2. Prepare your usual cake dough , separate it into 2 and flavor one half with a blueberry puree (or chocolate). Place 1 tablespoon of plain dough in the center of the mold and let it spread out to obtain a nice disc of 8 cm approx.
  3. Place on top and in the center the same amount of flavored dough with another tablespoon and let it spread.
  4. Renew the operation until all 2 pasta are gone. Make sure that the dough is well rounded and well centered. If necessary, bend the mold to slide the dough and adjust its spread. Bake for 35 minutes at 180 ° C.
