Kyle Edmund made a winning start to the Citi Open as he defeated Hyeon Chung in the first round, but Heather Watson crashed out.

The 22-year-old British number two arrived in Washington on the back of his progression to the semi-finals of the Atlanta Open last week.

And his good form shows no signs of abating after he cruised past his South Korean opponent 6-3 6-1 in 57 minutes.

Edmund's reward is a tough second round showdown against fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov later on Wednesday.

However, fellow Briton, Watson, squandered set points in the first set and then saved two match points before losing 7-6(7-4) 7-6(7-3) against Romania's world number 134 Patricia Maria Tig in two hours and three minutes.

There was better news regarding Britain's Jamie Murray as he secured a place in the quarter-finals of the men's doubles alongside Brazilian Bruno Soares with a 7-6(8-6) 6-1 win over France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin and American Steve Johnson.
